About the alpacas

Alpacas are camelids, cousins of camels and llamas. Alpacas are usually found in South America, specifically in the Andean region. They are often raised for their high quality natural fibre, which is softer than wool, it is hypoallergenic and 6 to 7 times warmer and sheep wool.

Alpacas live in herds. They have a 20 to 25 years life span. Alpacas weigh between 100 and 190 pounds. When they are raised, mating is usually scheduled by the breeder. Gestation lasts about 340 days. Females give birth during the day to a baby that weighs between 14 and 20 pounds. Females only give birth to one baby per year.

The alpaca’s natural fibre can be of 22 different shades, anywhere from white to black. Alpacas are the only species of animal that has so many different kinds of shades. Alpacas are trimmed once a year, during spring, and each alpaca provides roughly 8 pounds of natural fibre.

Alpacas are kind for the environment as they cut the grass instead of tearing it and their hooves are padded.
